VOCABULARY

The development of children’s vocabulary is a key skill that is influenced by and influences their reading and writing abilities. At St Paul’s, we are dedicated to enriching, enlarging and enhancing children’s receptive and expressive vocabulary.

#VOCAB is our own St Paul's approach to highlighting and explicitly teaching words which are important for children to read, understand and use in their own writing. We focus on common words that occur frequently and have multiple meanings, alongside specific and technical language.

From Reception to Year 6, we also use the Mrs Wordsmith curriculum to introduce and define ambitious new vocabulary. Every week, one class shares what they have learned in the weekly newsletter. We discuss intensity of meanings, such as the difference between 'melancholic' and 'sad', and how these impact on what we as orators, writers and readers can convey or understand.
